Speed Fishing

After an enjoyable outing earlier in the year I was asked if we could do a quick trip for Elliot to celebrate his birthday. Elliot was joined by his dad and his brother Emmett as we headed out for a flexible trip that would last as long as Elliot wanted it to last. Unfortunately we started this afternoon trip with a bit if a heavy rain, and after a relatively quick run across the lake the kids were laughing that “The rain felt like hail hitting me in the face!”. Not how you want a fishing trip to go, but we were going to make the most of it.

With the weather affecting things more than we would like we chose to head to a bit of a sheltered area, throwing small swimbaits and small spinnerbaits up shallow for any bites. We managed to put each ofthe kids onto a fish, a small pickerel for Elliot, and a small bass for Emmett. We tried to hit a deeper main lake spot for some better fish but the wind and the rain were just too much, and we had to end this trip a lot earlier than any of us would have hoped.

This trip is probably the first (and hopefully the only) time that guests were running to the car early to get away from me, but I don’t take it personally. We hit some ugly conditions that we tried our best in, and we certainly enjoyed the short time we had on the water. Hopefully we’ll get another chance in the future when the weather and the fish are more cooperative, and when we don’t have to deal with rain that feels like hail when we’re running across the lake.

And lets focus on the important part of this quick trip… kids always look happy when they have a fish in their hands, regardless of the weather.
